Red Wine-Pomegranate Poached Apples: Use 2 cups dry red wine; 1 cup pomegranate juice; 1 cup water; 1/4 cup packed brown sugar; 2 cinnamon sticks; 8 whole cloves; and 4 whole allspice. The foliage colors are also much more interesting in the spirea japonica group. Some varieties have orange and gold leaves, often with a purple cast to the bottoms of the leaves, which creates a nice multi-color effect.
